Great XNA Game, Three Reaction Mini-Games for 200 MS Points
Rabid Gophers, a 200 MS point XNA community game on Xbox Live Marketplace, takes the old carnival game Whack-a-Mole and crafts three similar reaction-based games with online leaderboard scores. While the premise and gameplay offer little more than what can be found online for free with flash games, the high quality graphics and low price makes Rabid Gophers a good choice for anyone with leftover MS points.
Rabid Gophers Mini-Games - Gopher Blast, Gopher Bombs, Gopher Sniper
Rabid Gophers offers three different mini-games: Gopher Blast, Gopher Bombs, and Gopher Sniper.
Gopher Blast most closely resembles the original Whack-A-Mole game, to which this game is obviously inspired. Each hole is assigned a button - LT - RT - X - Y - A - B - and whenever a gopher peeks out of the hole, press the correct button and blast its head off with a shotgun.
Gopher Bombs has players quickly pressing strings of buttons from left to right to detonate TNT and explode all the gophers in the string. The string becomes longer in a short amount of time, adding significantly to the challenge.
The final game type, Gopher Sniper, is a simple point and shoot mini-game. Simply guide the aiming reticule with the left control stick, and fire with A or one of the triggers.
Each mini-game in Rabid Gophers is simply a test of the player's reaction time, nothing more, nothing less.
Rabid Gophers Graphics
The graphics for Rabid Gophers is as simple as the game itself, but at the same time very crisp and detailed and looks great on an HDTV. Each dead gopher goes up in a spray of blood, and when the player finally gives in and can't handle the increased difficulty, a gopher jumps straight at the TV, which still looks crisp and detailed despite the close proximity.
Best XNA Games - Rabid Gophers Review - Conclusion
At any more than a 200 MS point asking price, Rabid Gophers would cost too much. But for little over $2, Rabid Gophers offers Whack-a-Mole style reaction mini-games with a great pick-up-and-play feel. Players will unlikely sink hours into this title at any given time, but a few minutes here and a few minutes there can add up quickly.
