Ghostbusters: The Video Game Preview

Terminal Reality Teams with Original Writers for Ghostbusters Game

Ghostbusters: The Video Game follows the antics of the ghosbusting team, Ray, Winston, Egon, and Peter, as they attempt to re-establish order in New York City.

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the first Ghostbusters film, Terminal Reality joined forces with the original writers, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis, to bring gamers a new Ghostbusters video game.

Basic Storyline of the New Ghostbusters Game

Players get to fight the spirits of evil alongside the original Ghostbusters, Ray, Winston, Egon and Peter, as a new recruit to the Ghostbusters team. The game takes place in 1991, two years after the events of the second film, where a new exhibit on all things Gozer, the main antagonist of the Ghostbusters, is about to open in New York.

This, of course, leads to disaster when all the Ghosts that the Ghostbuster team had captured are unleashed again on New York City. Players will face off against the Library Ghost from the first film, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Slimer and a host of other ghastly ghouls in their attempt to protect the world from total destruction.

A Mix of Old and New Ghostbusting Weaponry

Players will start off the game with their basic proton pack, which is upgradeable throughout the game. The new recruits will have to track down ghosts using their PKE (Psycho Kinetic Energy) meter and then hit them with their proton pack in an attempt to capture them in the Ghostbusters Ghost Trap. The proton pack comes with a secondary fire option called the Boson Dart, which shoots a concentrated stream from the pack. It is more effective, but overheats the pack faster.

Another weapon is the dark matter style shotgun, which shoots a shock blast or, as its secondary fire, shoots a stasis stream to slow enemies down. The most fun weapon will probably be the Slime Blower, which shoots green goo that some ghosts are vulnerable to. Its secondary fire is called the Slime Tether, which allows gamers to attach two objects together and then watch them contract together – this is extremely useful for finishing puzzles or catching ghosts.

The final weapon is the Meson Collider, which shoots a homing beacon, and then as its secondary fire has a homing missile. While all the weapons have their own style and uses, most players will just enjoy messing around with the proton pack, as it is the most traditional and probably the most powerful once upgraded.

Destructible Environments in Ghostbusters

Destructible environments are nothing new to the video game scene, but they do add a lot of authenticity to the Ghostbusters title. Players will enjoy watching books fly through the room and chandeliers crashing to the floor as they attempt to fire their proton pack at annoying poltergeists and evil spirits. The proton pack will even leave devastating burn marks on walls and ceilings to remind players just how hard it is to catch a ghost.

Concluding Thoughts on the New Ghostbusters Video Game

The first two films in the Ghostbusters series are classic comedies that have sparked a whole line of games, comics and cartoons. This new outing into the Ghostbusters universe should be just as incredible, especially with the original writers on board. Hopefully the game will be as fun as the movies, with humor, scares and an interesting storyline. Apparently a new film is also in the works, so fans will have their hands full with new Ghostbuster action for a few more years.

Release Date for Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Ghostbusters: The Video Game is slated for release June 2009 in order to coincide with the release of the 25th Anniversary DVD for the first Ghostbusters movie.
