Tips and Hints for the Payload Map in Team Fortress 2

Jun 7, 2009 Stuart Cooke

Moving the cart or pushing it back, there is always a lot to do in Team Fortress Payload maps. Gold Rush is a series of three maps, each with their own viable strategies!

The basic premise of a Team Fortress 2 Payload map is for the blue team to move a cart along a pre-decided route and for the red team to attempt to stop them. When on either defense or offense, there are a number of things that must be kept in mind in order to be successful.

Stage 1 Gold Rush

In the first stage of Gold-Rush, the Blue team faces off against a small hill and then a hut on the right hand side of the map. The hut can be a stronghold for the defending red team, as well as a haven for Snipers. After capturing this area, the Blue team must move the cart through a small passageway before conquering an open area with many sniper spots and an attic to contend.

  • When defending, concentrate fire on or around the cart. A great deal of distance can be made by a sneaky scout when the defending team is distracted. When other classes are pinning the cart down, the blue team will have a hard time in moving the cart toward their goal.
  • When moving forward, depending on the class being played, there are favourable strategies. Team Fortress 2 is about making the most of differences between classes, so when playing Medic, stay alive and build Ubers for major pushes. Other classes, such as Scouts, Soldiers and Medics should use their mobility to move other players away from the cart. Support classes such as Engineers and Snipers should do their best to provide distractions or teleporters.

Stage 2 Gold Rush

The second stage of gold rush challenges the blue team to move their cart right through enemy territory. Red will have the benefit of a raised platform to the right of the track and a sheltered shack to the left. After capturing this area, Blue gains a sniper's roost but has to face off against a very well-defended final point, with many hidden spots for Sentries.

  • Many defending players forget that Blue can get behind enemy lines by running through the tunnel on the left. Make the most of this opportunity to take out Snipers and recon possible Sentry locations.
  • Adversely, shutting down Blue's access to one half of the map will make life incredibly difficult for them. Often, all that is required is a presence on one side of the map to hold Blue up and put a wrench in their plans.

Final Stage Gold Rush

Blue has to push their cart through three different points on the last stage of this payload map. The first point is an uphill climb with a building on the left hand side. The second point's focus is a narrow pathway through a number of wooden tunnels and hiding places. Finally, Blue must push the cart into one of TF2's most well defended areas; an opening holding a small canyon and an incredibly powerful sniper's roost.

  • Blue will encounter three major difficulties in this stage. The first will be the very first corner they encounter, right by the first point. This is directly next to Red's respawn point and can be overloaded with Sentry guns. The second is at the very end of the narrow pathway. Well-hidden spots provide great defensive locations for Demomen and Heavies. In the final point, getting the cart around the corner will again prove difficult due to Sentry locations.
  • As with most other maps, the Medic's importance cannot be understated! If a team does not have a Medic, switch and begin to charge an Uber! This will make the difference.
  • For Red, the most important strategy is to protect the defensive locales. This means keeping Engineers and Heavies alive, pinning down enemy snipers and ensuring that Ubercharging enemies do not get too far behind enemy lines.

Gold Rush is one of the more fun maps to play in Team Fortress 2. The focus on the cart keeps players returning to one main spot and everyone is always aware of how long is left or how far there is to go.

With these hints and tips in mind, playing this map should no longer be confusing and instead, the player will be able to confidently take their teammates to TF2 victory!
