Kirby's Adventure - NES ReviewA NES Platformer That Stands Out Above Most Others
One of the later titles in the NES library, Kirby's Adventure provided a fun and diverse adventure all while pushing the system to its technical limits.
After around 10 years and countless platformers, the Nintendo Entertainment System saw the release of one of its most unique titles of the genre. Kirby’s Adventure was released in 1993 for the NES, and due to the fact that the console had been around for so long, developer HAL Laboratory was able to push the NES to its technical limits. The game wasn’t just pretty graphics, though. Kirby’s Adventure managed to incorporate game mechanics unique to that franchise. The result was a game with high aesthetic value and fun, immersive gameplay. And despite not being as popular as other games on the NES, Kirby’s Adventure is a highly enjoyable game worth playing. Kirby’s Adventure – Retrieve the Star RodThe plot in Kirby’s Adventure revolves around the Star Rod, an artifact from Dream Land, Kirby’s home. The citizens of Dream Land are unable to have dreams, and Kirby discovers that this was caused by King DeDeDe, who broke the Star Rod into seven pieces. It is up to Kirby to travel through seven worlds and collect all the pieces of the Star Rod. Gameplay – A Unique 2D PlatformerKirby’s Adventure is different from most other platformers on the NES due mainly to its combat mechanics. Kirby has the ability to inhale his enemies and gain special skills by doing so. These abilities can be used to destroy foes or remove obstructions from the different stages in the game. There are over 20 copy abilities in the game. Beam allows Kirby to shoot a burst of energy. Sword equips the hero with a blade that can be used in close combat. Stone turns him into a solid rock, granting him great defensive stats. These are just a few of the many abilities found in the game. The platforming in Kirby’s Adventure, while not revolutionary, is very well thought out. The level design is intricate and manages to captivate the player. Because he is a balloon-shaped creature, Kirby has the ability to float in the air. As a result of this, players can get through some of the game’s obstacles aerially. The game’s combination of innovative combat and stylized platforming creates an engaging experience different than any other. Boss fights are another one of the game’s selling points. After completing all the stages in a world, Kirby must take on that world’s boss. While Kirby can use copy abilities against the many bosses, he can also suck up any debris or objects in the area and use them as weapons by spitting them out at foes. Boss fights are fun and frantic, and they keep the player immersed. Kirby is placed in a lobby in between stages. Here, players can participate in mini-games to earn extra lives and abilities; fight mini-bosses to collect health power-ups; and warp between levels. Certain doors in the lobby are blocked off, and switches must be discovered within the various stages in order to access these areas. Graphics and SoundQuite possibly one of the greatest technical achievements on the NES, Kirby’s Adventure offers detailed graphics and colorful levels. Everything in the game has a diversified fantasy look to it, and HAL Laboratory even threw in some quasi-3D effects into the game. The only problem that arises sporadically is slow-down when there is too much going on at once, but this doesn’t deter from the experience at all. The soundtrack in Kirby’s Adventure is one of the most impressive, original pieces of any game on the NES. There are different songs for levels, mini-games, lobbies, and boss fights, and each track exudes a different emotion. Filled to the brim with charm, each of the themes is very inspired and very thoughtful. Lasting ValueWith just over 40 stages in total, Kirby’s Adventure is not a very long game. It’s not a very difficult game either, for that matter. Still, there is a decent amount of replay value in the game. Finding every switch in the stages and taking part in all the bonus games adds to the game’s lasting value. Also, after achieving 100% completion, players can go through the game in Extra mode. Here, Kirby’s life meter is cut in half. This bumps up the game’s difficulty level a bit, and it’s a good reason to play through the game all over again. Kirby’s Adventure – A Late-era NES MasterpieceKirby’s Adventure was released for the NES in 1993. By this time, the system’s limitations had been discovered. HAL and Nintendo managed to push the console to its limit with Kirby’s Adventure and created a must-play NES title whose originality rivals the successful Super Mario Bros. 3. Despite not being the biggest or most difficult game, Kirby’s Adventure is a must-play platformer for fans of the genre, old-school gamers, and video game fans in general. Score: 9/10
