Red Faction Guerrilla Multiplayer Demo (Preview)Impressions of RFG Demo Showcasing Online Multiplayer for 360, PS3
Red Faction: Guerrilla Multiplayer demo released May 21 2009. Read the RF:G demo impressions showcasing the online, physics-based, third-person shooter action.
Developer Volition prides itself on the Red Faction series, which consistently ups the bar on realistic, in-game physics and destruction. The latest in the series Red Faction: Guerrilla, releasing on June 2 2009 for Xbox 360 and PS3, and August 25 2009 for PC, is a third person action game which features some of the most realistic physics to date in a video game. The single-player demo already released, showing a brief glimpse into the open world of 100+ missions. On May 21 2009, the Red Faction Guerrilla online multiplayer demo released, giving a detailed look into the online competition. Read below for demo impressions on the multiplayer components to Red Faction: Guerrilla. Red Faction Demo ImpressionsThe Red Faction Guerrilla multiplayer demo features more weaponry than the single-player demo, and finally allows gamers the opportunity to try out the unique "backpacks" available for combat. Players can equip one backpack at a time, and each one offers a unique ability such as flying on a jetpack, or breaking through walls with a rhino pack. The featured game mode in the Red Faction demo is called Damage Control. Players vie for control over various target points, breaking down the enemy target points, and reassembling them to gain points. While a little slow-paced compared to FPS games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Red Faction Guerrilla offers a unique game experience by allowing realistic physics-based destruction even in the online multiplayer. Red Faction Guerrilla BackpacksThe demo showcases 5 out of 10 total backpacks available in the full version. The featured backpacks are as follows: Jetpack, Fleetfoot, Rhino, Concussion, and Stealth. The backpack's ability is activated using the L Button, and each jetpack will recharge over a short period of time. Jetpack is somewhat self-explanatory, as it allows players the ability to fly through the air for a limited time. It's a great pack for reaching high places, or for simply covering large distances in a short amount of time. Fleetfoot allows for a short burst of running speed. Since the sprint option is absent in multiplayer, Fleetfoot somewhat fills the void. Great for quick travel and for dodging enemy fire. Rhino creates a bull-rush of a smash, knocking down enemies and anything else in it's path. During the demo, Rhino was useful for crushing enemy target points quickly. Concussion creates a small explosion around the player, creating a knockdown effect for any enemies nearby, and slightly damaging buildings and walls in close proximity. It's a great counter to hammer-happy enemies, but isn't particularly useful other than that. Stealth, the last backpack available in the demo, allows the user partial camoflauge (similar to Halo) for a short period of time. Good for sneaking past (or sneaking up on) enemies. The backpacks work similarly to perks in Call of Duty, adding variety and strategy to the competitive online multiplayer. Red Faction Guerrilla WeaponsThe multiplayer demo features far more varied weaponry than the single-player demo. Additional weapons include an short-range, lock-on electricity rifle, a rocket launcher, a rail gun, and more. The electricty rifle takes a while to kill enemies, and has a painfully short range, but the weapon auto-locks and can be devestating when combined with a maneuverable backpack like the jetpack or the fleetfoot. With realistic physics-based destruction, naturally the rocket launcher satisfies for destroying both buildings and people alike. And the rail gun is a sniper rifle with x-ray vision, capable of piercing through walls. Perhaps more interesting and impressive than the weaponry, however, is the Reconstructor tool. Buildings, walls, towers, target points - anything destructable - can literally be rebuilt before the player's own eyes using this unique tool. Reconstructing an entire building may be a thankless chore, but watching the walls, floor, and ceiling be created anew is a truly unique, and wonderful, experience that can only be found in Red Faction: Guerrilla. Red Faction Multiplayer Demo ConclusionThe demo only supports up to 8 players, and only offers one mode of play. The full version of Red Faction: Guerrilla will support up to 16 players, with 6 different game modes, 10 backpacks, and loads of weapons. Even though the aiming and controls may not seem as tight-on as a FPS title like Call of Duty 4, this third person shooter will certainly stand out from the crowd with a unique, realistic physics engine and creative strategies. The Red Faction Guerrilla release date for Xbox 360 and PS3 is June 2 2009, while the PC version will release August 25 2009.
