Survival horror / action game Resident Evil 5's Mercenaries Mode pits 1-2 players inside a small level, rewarding a high score for surviving long lengths of time and defeating numerous enemies at a time for big combo bonuses. Chris Redfield (BSAA) is one of two characters available after Mercenaries Mode is unlocked. Mercenaries is unlocked by playing through the single-player / co-op campaign mode.

Chris Redfield (BSAA) Equipment

The following is a list of all the weapons, equipment, and supplies Chris Redfield, BSAA Outfit, carries at the start of the match.

Chris Redfield receives two weapons (handgun and shotgun), a grenade type, some ammunition, and a first aid spray.

Mercs Equipment Guide - Ithaca Shotgun and M92F Handgun

Chris Redfield (BSAA) seems designed for one particular purpose: crowd control. The M92 Handgun has a high ammo capacity for dealing with mobs, and the Ithaca M37 shotgun is great at knocking back many weaker enemies, and can usually kill them in 1-2 hits. Additionally, Chris gets hand grenades - a very quick means of crowd dispersal.

Where Chris meets his match, however, is against the larger opponents. The Ithaca shotgun just doesn't cut it against Executioners, Reapers, Chainsaw Majini and other large baddies, and the weak M92F certainly won't help either. Even worse, the two and a half second reload time for the Ithaca is just enough time for a big Majini to deal a killing blow.

Hand grenades help significantly against the larger foes and create a set up for melee strikes, but they run out quickly.

Chris's melee strikes aren't anything special either. Unfortunately, Chris Redfield in the BSAA costume has one of the weakest equipment sets in the game. The included First Aid Spray, however, does help for survival.

Mercenaries High Score Hints and Tips for Chris BSAA

Shotgun shells are best saved for mobs. The M92F handgun is best when fighting 1-3 weaker monsters at a time. Using the pistol to set up for melee strikes is not only a great way to conserve ammo, but more importantly, if an enemy is killed by melee, the player receives a +5 second bonus to the timer.

Shooting an enemy in the knee, and then getting behind the enemy and using Chris's "Neck Snap" melee attack is a sure kill with a +5 time bonus. However, the attack takes some time to set up and leaves Chris vulnerable to attack afterward. Chris's "Uppercut" and "Straight" melee strikes play it safe by knocking back many foes, but unless the enemy is already damaged, a killing blow is rare.

Chris can avoid the M92F handgun altogether by dropping it at the start of the match and sticking exclusively to the Shotgun. Combos and kills in general are easier with just the Shotgun, but the Shotgun cannot set up as many Melee attacks for time bonuses.

Chris works best on levels without huge boss Majini such as the Reaper, Executioner, or Chainsaw Majini. Keep hand grenades if fighting on a stage with a huge boss character. The grenades can be useful to clear normal Majini and to damage the boss character enough to set up a melee strike.

Chris Redfield (BSAA) in Co-op play

Playing Co-op, Chris works well with any other character that primarily uses a shotgun, since the two characters can share ammunition.

If item-swapping isn't a major concern, Chris works best when paired with a character that offsets his weaknesses. Chris isn't great at taking out larger opponents, and has very little range in his attacks. Sheva BSAA complements him quite nicely with a good rifle - able to pick off foes from afar to keep the combo string going, and to deal huge damage to approaching boss Majini.

Chris Redfield (BSAA) Conclusion

BSAA Chris is by no means the strongest character in Mercenaries Mode, but this is to be expected since he is unlocked from the beginning. Use Chris Redfield BSAA to unlock other characters, but, when shooting for a high score, it might be best to pick a stronger Mercenary, particularly one that has an easier time taking down the larger foes.
