Review: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)Activision And Infinity Ward Combine Again To Create A True Gem.
Set five years after the events of the first Modern Warfare, you are thrust into the fight against the Shadow of Zakhaev, with help from some familiar faces.
To say the release of Modern Warfare 2 has been highly anticipated would be an understatement. After its hugely successful predecessor, Modern Warfare 2 has some very high expectations. For those that played the first Modern Warfare, they will know that Infinity Ward created possibly the best FPS of all time. The game was gritty, graphically fantastic and the gameplay was nigh on flawless. The range of weaponry was great, with guns to suit all manner of gamers. The realism gave the game a harsh learning curve, especially online, but was rewarding once mastered. Surely then, Modern Warfare 2 will offer more of the same? Why change a winning formula? Soap And Roach:The story and therefore the single player in Modern Warfare two is fast-paced and action-packed. Just like its predecessor the plot is set over several days in many different locations following the 'US Rangers' and 'Taskforce 141'. The heroes are still tracking down the terrorist organisation from the first modern warfare, before various twists and turns send the story off in different directions. Some of the single player missions may be a little disturbing for some viewers as the game highlights some of the darker aspects of terrorism and war. There is an option to have these missions omitted for those with a weaker disposition. The single player is, again, very short, which is disappointing considering how good it is. However, it is with the multi-player where this game really earns its stripes. Deathmatch, Domination And Sabotage:There is so much to discuss when it comes to Modern Warfare 2's Multiplayer, that an entirely separate article could be written on it, however, here just an overview will be written. Things that make a return are the game modes, prestige mode and some of the guns, most notably the Barrett 50.Cal sniper rifle and the AK47 assault rifle. There are a lot of new guns, again, to suit every gamer and even riot shields. The customisable elements of the multi-player have been increased. There are more weapon attachments, including the awesome heartbeat sensor and thermal scope. There are more challenges to unlock including challenged for your secondary weapon. There are more secondary weapons to begin with and more perks as well. One can even customise which killstreak rewards one gets. There is a lot more on offer here which adds to an already fantastic multi-player experience. The only issue with the multi-player is that, for those new to the game or new to FPS's, there is a very harsh learning curve. It is intensely difficult to get in to if new players are getting slaughtered every time they log on. Stick with it though and improvement will surely happen and bring rewards. American Suburbs and Russian Oil Rigs:The settings and levels of both the single player and the multi-player modes look nothing short of amazing. The weapons looks great, the characters look great and the animations are fluid, realistic and smooth. Even reloading is something special to watch. The effects, such as smoke or fire, and even the dust caught in the wind are also fantastic. As a visual experience this game truly delivers. It also sounds great. The footsteps on concrete or snow are distinctly different, the sounds of different guns are noticeable and the bullets whizzing past your head let you know someone has you in their sights. The voice acting also is top notch, not just for the main characters but for everyone. The Good:
The Bad:
Verdict: 9.5/10Giving any game full marks is going to be nigh on impossible, because then the “perfect”game will have been created with zero flaws, and that in itself is impossible. However, this is as close as we have come to perfection. The single player, although short, is a high intense ride through American suburbs and Russian mountains, snowy countrysides and desert landscapes. The already excellent multi-player from the first Modern Warfare has had an upgrade and become hugely customisable. This game looks, sounds and plays brilliantly; all in all, Modern Warfare 2 is fantastic.
