How to play as an Upsilon Force Mercenary

This article offers tips on how to use the slow-moving but deadly mercenaries of Upsilon Force in Splinter Cell Double Agent's multiplayer mode.

Unlike the Spy, the Mercenary (Merc) is not very nimble. Capable of only simple climbing, walking or running motions, it would never be possible for a Merc to track down a Spy hiding in the rafters. However, they more than make up for this with sheer firepower.

The Mercs have only one objective- to kill every single spy and stop them extracting the two files needed for a Shadownet victory. To do this, the Merc comes armed with a whole host of weapons and gadgets, and savvy gamers can track down and kill spies with ease.

A Mercenary’s Tools Will Win The Battle Over Xbox Live

The Merc has a rig that is perfect for hunting Spies:

  • EMF Visor- When turned on, this shows any electrical object in a white sheen, but it is only clear when the Merc is standing still, so when tracking a hacking Spy, stand in a corner and use the visor- Spies who are using their wrist computer show up clearly.
  • Proximity Detector- This gadget produces a beeping noise when a Spy is within 10 metres of the Merc. The faster the beep, the closer the Spy. Keep in mind that a spy could be above or below the Merc, and the proximity detector won’t indicate the direction.
  • Drones- Drones are remote control devices that can be used to explore smaller areas. They are equipped with an explosive that detonates when it’s near a spy, but it can also detonate on command- use drones to force Spies into traps. However, remember that using a drone leaves the Merc undefended, so the best policy is to deploy a drone and leave the Merc with his back to a wall- to prevent a clever Spy from taking advantage.
  • Motion Detector- Fast moving Spies show up in a white outline in this gadget, perfect for the high-speed chase that always occurs when chasing a Spy.
  • Flashlight- Attached to the rifle, the flashlight is the key tool for finding and eliminating spies.

This Is My Rifle, This Is My Gun

The Merc’s rifle is the one-size-fits-all weapon for wiping out Spies, and features a sniper scope, full auto machine gun and grenade launcher.

  • The machine gun has unlimited bullets, but only 30 rounds in a magazine- so reloading is essential between bursts. Keep the flashlight off when sneaking up on a terminal or setting a trap, then snap it on and unleash the machine gun’s high rate-of-fire
  • The grenade launcher only has four rounds, and using the targeting arc is difficult, but putting grenades into air vents and around the terminals is a quick way to take out the spies.
  • The sniper rifle is perfect when used in combination with the EMF visor- use the visor to spot the target, and the sniper to grab a headshot.

Basic Gameplay Tips for an Upsilon Mercenary over Xbox Live Multiplayer

As Mercs can’t use the air vents or crawl spaces, try to remember where they are- as it is very easy to track a Spy if you know where the vent they entered into comes out.

Try not to run into every situation all guns blazing, because a decent Spy will just vanish as they see the approaching flashlight. Instead, turn off the flashlight and move slowly, check the corners of the target room and keep an eye on the sensors.

Communicate constantly with the other two Mercs- keep updating each other on the location of Spies, and work to flush the enemy into the open or into a trap.

Don’t be afraid to camp- hide in a corner or on a balcony and wait for the Spies to make a move. Also remember that grenades are deadly, and an unlimited supply is available from the refill ammo box- indulge your grenade launcher.

Stay clear of balconies and railings, especially if the motion sensor is beeping but nothing is in sight- Spies may well be waiting to drag an unwary Merc over the edge.

Finally, remember that walls are a Merc’s friend- when fighting a Spy, or blinded by a flash grenade for example, back up against a wall and wait for the visor to clear- Spies can’t break a Merc’s neck if his back is against a wall.

Get Up Close And Personal For Easy Kills On Double Agent’s Xbox Live Multiplayer

The Merc is also gifted in close combat, with two attacks that are perfect for taking out a cocky Spy.

Clicking the left stick in makes the Merc spin 180 degrees, knocking any nearby Spies (or Mercs- be careful) to the ground. They can then be picked up and finished with a brutal headbutt with a press of the A button.

Using the Merc’s sprint option (RB) allows a sudden increase of speed, and running into a Spy will result in that Spy being flung to the ground- a Merc always runs faster than a Spy- run them down.

Communicate, innovate and attack

A decent team of Mercs can demolish Spies in minutes- work together and be careful. Try to think like a Spy would, and be prepared for anything- Spies can come from any direction, but with practice, wiping out the Shadownet forces becomes easy.
