How to Play Medic in TF2

The Medic is perhaps the most important of classes. A well-played Medic can be the difference between a winning and losing team in TF2!

The Medic is a hugely important role for any team in TF2. No matter which style of gameplay, be it Arena, Payload, Capture Point or Capture-the-Flag, a Medic can be the absolute difference between a winning and losing team.

Thankfully, it is not too challenging to be a great Medic. With a little care and some prudent decision making, a player can be a chart-topping Medic with only a few short hours practice. It's also a huge amount of fun!

General Healing

One of the major mistakes that Medics make is choosing one target to heal and staying with them. This ignores the rest of your team and reduces the impact a Medic will have on the scoreboard and the outcome of the match.

  • Spread your heals between players. Get them to their over-heal capacity (150% of normal) and then find someone else to buff up.
  • When teammates are injured, choose the ones that are most injured first. The Medic's gun heals them more quickly than less-injured people.
  • Due to the benefit of the Ubercharge, a Medic is no good staying in a battle until death. One must retreat when threatened to save their Ubercharge and keep it moving toward 100%.

Medigun Use

The first weapon that the Medic has access to is the Medigun. This gun will build an Ubercharge that you can then unleash on your Team Fortress teammates. It will make them invincible for a short period of time. To make the most of this, do the following:

  • Choose appropriate targets to make invincible. Heavies are good for a variety of uses, including player killing and general destruction, whereas Demomen are best for taking down enemy sentries and Pyros are best for defensive/offensive damage.
  • Keep that gun charging at all times. Don't allow it to stop or the Medic will be wasting time.
  • Keep the current requirements in mind when switching away from the Medigun. If there are other players around, heal them, but if the Medic finds themselves alone, they are best of with their Melee weapon or Syringe gun.

The Kritzkrieg

The Kritzkrieg is a weapon that will ensure a 100% critical chance upon ubercharge. This can be very useful in certain places and with certain classes.

  • A guaranteed critical bullet from a Heavy will stop a great deal of opposing team members.
  • Steer clear of Pyros as they will have a hard time getting close enough to make the most of the increased damage.
  • Be defensive and use cover when ubering, as the Medic is just as vulnerable as normal with this type of Medigun.

Syringe Gun / Blutsauger

Many Medics like to fall into the role of the "Battle-Medic" in which they heal teammates as well as pumping out damage. This can be very effective, if done at the right time.

  • A Medic will have a hard time killing anyone by themselves. Use other teammates to maximize killing potential.
  • After unlocking the Ubersaw (a melee weapon that charges the Medigun upon hit) - use it as much as possible to get the most Uber opportunities.
  • Fire syringes while retreating to get health (with the Blutsauger) and distract the enemy from hitting the Medic.

The Medic is a class that will be very useful, no matter what the map is that is being played. The most important thing to remember when playing as a Medic in Team Fortress 2 is that if heals are spread out between teammates, they will all stay alive far longer, increasing their effectiveness and capturing objectives. Have fun healing your teammates!
